이란의 군부 실세이자, 혁명수비대 정예군 ‘쿠드스군’ 사령관 거셈 솔레이마니가 3일(현지시간) 이라크 바그다드에서 미군 공습에 사망했다고 AFP·로이터통신이 보도했다. 친(親)이란 시아파 민병대(PMF·하시드 알사비)를 이끄는 아부 마흐디 알무한디스 부사령관도 숨졌다.
PMF는 성명을 내고 ”바그다드 국제공항 도로에 있는 그들의 차량을 미국이 공습했다”며 ”미국과 이스라엘이 배후에 있다”고 밝혔다.
AP통신은 이들의 죽음을 중동에서 잠재적인 전환점이라고 표현했다. 그러면서 이란과 그들을 지원하는 세력이 이스라엘과 미국에 대해 심각한 보복을 할 것으로 보인다고 말했다.
미국 국방부도 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령의 지시에 따라 미군이 솔레이마니 사령관을 살해했다고 이날 밝혔다. 익명을 요구한 미 당국 관계자도 로이터에 미국은 바그다드에서 이란과 연계된 두 개의 목표를 대상으로 공습을 진행했다고 말했다. 이외 구체적인 정보 제공은 거부했다.
