외교부 당국자는 이날 "혼다 전 의원을 서훈 대상으로 외교부 의견으로 추천했다"면서 "행정자치부에서 이를 검토하는 단계"라고 밝혔다.
그러면서 "이미 몇몇 분들에게는 훈장이 전달됐다"면서 "에드 로이스 미 하원 외무위원장에게는 2월에 훈장이 전달된 것으로 안다"고 덧붙였다.
한편 혼다 전 의원과 로이스 위원장은 2015년 4월 아베 신조(安倍晋三) 일본 총리의 미국 의회 상·하원 합동 연설을 앞두고 과거사를 정면으로 직시하라는 내용을 담은 초당적 연명 서한을 주도하기도 했다.
