난민 어린이 쿠르디가 사망한 이후, 지금까지 77명의 난민 어린이가 지중해를 건너다가 사망했다.
뉴욕타임스는 10월 30일 국제이주기구를 안용해 시리아 난민 아일란 쿠르디의 시신이 발견된 이후에도 지중해를 건너다가 익사한 어린이의 숫자가 77명으로 집계됐다고 보도했다.

연합뉴스 10월 30일 보도에 따르면 30일 당일에도 에게해에서 난민선이 침몰해 8명의 어린이가 숨진것으로 알려졌다. 국제이주기구에 의하면 2015년 한해 지중해를 건너 유럽으로 간 난민의 숫자는 72만명에 달하고, 이 중 3,329명이 익사했다.
지난 9월 2일 시리아 코바니에서 유럽으로 향하던 난민선이 뒤집히면서 3살 소년 아일란 쿠르디가 사망했고, 해변에서 발견된 쿠르디의 사진은 유럽연합의 난민 정책을 변화시키는 기폭제가 됐다. 그러나 여전히 난민 어린이들은 지중해에서 목숨을 잃고 있다.
