후쿠시마 방사능이 마침내 태평양을 건너 캐나다에 도달했다.

연합뉴스는 4월 7일 "2011년 3월 일본 후쿠시마 원전사고로 발생한 방사성 물질이 4년 만에 태평양을 건너가 캐나다 서부 연안에서 처음으로 검출됐다고 미국 우즈홀 해양연구소가 6일(현지시간) 밝혔다."고 보도했다.

방사능이 검출된 곳은 캐나다 서부 밴쿠버섬의 유클루릿 앞바다이며, 후쿠시마와의 거리는 무려 7,350Km다. 방사능이 태평양을 건너는 데 4년이 걸린 셈이다.

캐나다인들이 크게 걱정할 필요는 없을지도 모르겠다.

연합뉴스에 의하면 검출된 방사성 물질은 인체나 해양 생물에 전혀 영향을 주지 못할 정도로 미량이고, "검출된 방사성 물질의 2배가 포함된 바다에서 사람이 매일 6시간씩 수영을 한다고 해도 치아 X선 촬영 1회로 발생하는 방사선보다 1천 배 적은 영향을 받는 것"이라고 하니 말이다.
