우간다 국립공원에서 4마리의 마운틴고릴라들이 번개에 맞아 죽었다고 한 동물보호단체가 9일 밝혔다.
AFP통신에 따르면 우간다 남서부의 마잉가 국립공원에서는 지난 3일 죽은 마운틴고릴라 4마리에 대한 부검이 실시됐다. 3마리는 암컷이고, 1마리는 어린 수컷이다.
비룽가 다국가 광역 협력체(GVTC)는 성명을 통해 ”부검 결과 4마리 모두의 사망 원인은 번개에 의해 감전일 가능성이 크다”고 밝혔다.
폐사된 이들 4마리는 지난해 8월 인근 르완다 화산 국립공원에서 마잉가 국립공원으로 건너온 히르와 가족 17마리 중 일부다. 나머지 13마리는 무사했다.
앤드류 세구야 GVTC 사무총장은 BBC와의 인터뷰에서 ”매우 슬프다”며 ”암컷 3마리는 개체 수 증가에 기여할 잠재력이 엄청났다”고 말했다.
영화 ‘킹콩’의 모델이기도 한 마운틴고릴라는 2008년에는 680마리밖에 안 남았지만, 보존 노력과 밀렵 방지 순찰 덕분에 현재는 1,000마리 이상으로 늘어 있다.
이런 노역과 성과에 힘입어 마운틴고릴라는 세계자연보전연맹(IUCN)이 지정한 ‘멸종위기종 적색목록‘에서 ‘멸종위기종’으로 바뀌었다.
