지난 1일 바하마에 상륙한 허리케인 도리안의 흔적이다. 최고 풍속 시속 297㎞. 역대 대서양 허리케인 중 최강급이었다. 도리안의 피해를 직접적으로 입은 그랜드바하마 지역 등엔 강풍을 동반한 폭우가 80㎝ 넘게 내렸다. 로스엔젤스타임즈에 따르면 이 지역을 헬기로 둘러본 지역 구조단체의 대원은 ”세상의 종말 같다. 폭탄이라도 터진 것처럼 보인다”라고 말했다.
바하마 당국은 3일(현지시간) 현재 도리안으로 인해 아바코섬에서만 5명이 사망했다고 밝혔다. 아직 정확한 피해 상황이 집계되지 않아 피해는 더 늘어날 것으로 보인다. 국제적십자사는 도리안으로 1만3000채의 주택이 파손됐을 거라고 추정했다. 해당 피해지역(아바코, 그랜드바하마) 전체 주택의 45%에 육박하는 숫자다. 하지만 그랜드바하바국제공황 활주로를 비롯해 주요 병원들까지 물에 잠겨 구조작업이 어려운 상황이다.

도리안은 바하마를 강타한 뒤 미국 남동부 해안으로 접근하고 있다. 미국 국립허리케인센터에 따르면 도리안의 규모는 기존 3등급에서 2등급으로 약화됐다. 그러나 여전히 최고 풍속 시속 175㎞에 달하는 강풍과 폭우를 동반하고 있어 플로리다주와 조지아주, 사우스캐롤라이나주 해안가 주민 2백만 명에 대피령이 발령된 상태다.
