야생 사진작가 데이지 길라디니(Daisy Gilardini)가 하와이 미드웨이 환초에서 찍은 사진을 보자. 세계자연보전연맹 적색목록에서 '멸종위기종'으로 이름을 올린 '검은발알바트로스'(Black-footed Albatross)의 사체다.

해양생물 보호단체 'Sea legacy'는 이 새가 플라스틱 쓰레기를 너무 많이 먹어 죽게 된 것이라고 말한다. 사진 속 새의 배 부분에 플라스틱 쓰레기가 한가득 들어있는 걸 볼 수 있다.

또한, Sea legacy에 따르면 충격적이게도 미드웨이에 사는 알바트로스가 매년 새끼들에게 무려 5톤의 플라스틱 쓰레기를 먹이는 것으로 조사됐다고 한다. 먹이와 비슷해 보이는 플라스틱 쓰레기를 자꾸 새끼에게 먹이고, 스스로도 섭취해 결국 죽음에 이르게 된다는 것.

Sea legacy는 "우리의 무분별한 (플라스틱) 소비가 수천마리의 알바트로스와 멸종위기종에게 슬픈 현실을 안기고 있다"고 지적한다.
