문재인 대통령이 29일 저녁(현지시간) 백악관에서 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과 만났다. 첫 대면이다.

이날 문 대통령 부부는 백악관에서 트럼프 대통령 부부와 함께 환영만찬 일정에 참석했다. 다음날(현지시간 30일 오전) 진행될 한미 정상회담에 앞서 상견례를 갖는 셈이다.

문 대통령은 이날 오후 6시 백악관 앞에 도착해 기다리고 있던 트럼프 대통령과 곧바로 악수를 나눴다.

트럼프 대통령은 악수를 하면서 1초 가량 왼손을 문 대통령 오른쪽 어깨에 가볍게 올렸다가 내렸고, 문 대통령도 왼손으로 트럼프 대통령의 오른팔을 가볍게 쥐며 악수를 나눴다. 악수는 5초 가량 이어졌다.

백악관 안으로 자리를 옮긴 뒤 트럼프 대통령은 환영사를 했다. 그는 "매우 아름답고 사랑스러운" 부인과 함께 방문한 문 대통령을 환영하며 "북한, 무역 등에 있어서 복잡한 문제들"에 대해 "오늘 밤 엄청나게 훌륭한 대화를 나눌 것"이라고 말했다.

트럼프 대통령은 문 대통령의 "위대한 대선 승리"를 축하하며 "많은 사람들이 (승리를) 기대하지 않았다. 나는 (당선을) 예상했다. 나는 그렇게 될 줄 알았다"고 말했다.

문 대통령은 "'가짜뉴스(Fake news)' 때문에 나도 고생이 많았다"는 농담(?)을 던지기도 했다. 미국 언론을 '가짜뉴스'로 공격하는 트럼프 대통령을 고려한 맞춤형 대사로 풀이된다.

한국 문재인 대통령이 트럼프 대통령에게 웃자고 꺼낸 말 : "우리도 가짜뉴스 때문에 문제가 많다."

트럼프 대통령이 백악관 만찬에 참석한 한국 문재인 대통령을 환영하며. "엄청나게 훌륭한 대화를 기대한다... 저녁 늦게까지 계속될 수도 있을 것 같다."

트럼프가 한국 대통령의 대선 승리에 대해 : "많은 사람들이 (승리를) 기대하지 않았다. 나는 예상했다."


이어 문 대통령은 "(트럼프) 대통령께서 북한 핵에 대해 최우선 과제로 삼음으로써 대한민국 국민의 한 사람으로서 희망을 갖고 있다"며 "만일 트럼프 대통령께서 북한 핵문제를 해결한다면 미국의 어느 대통령도 해결하지 못한 위대한 성과를 만드는 것이며, (트럼프) 대통령 또한 위대한 대통령이 될 것"이라고 말했다.

문 대통령은 또 "과거에는 북한 문제가 중요하다고 하면서도 실제 행동은 하지 않았다. 저는 트럼프 대통령의 강력한 힘에 기반한 외교에 전적으로 공감한다"고 강조하기도 했다. 오바마 정부를 우회적으로 비판하면서 트럼프 정부에 기대감을 나타낸 것.

이날 만찬은 예정보다 35분을 넘겨 총 125분 동안 진행됐다. 만찬이 끝난 뒤에도 문 대통령과 트럼프 대통령은 비공식 대화를 이어간 것으로 전해졌다.

만찬 메뉴와 참석자는 다음과 같았다.

만찬의 메인 메뉴는 겨자를 발라 구운 도버 솔(생선)과 차이브 버터 소스, 허브로 맛을 돋운 캐롤라이나산 황금미 비빔밥이었다. 만찬에는 우리 쪽에선 강경화 외교부 장관과 정의용 국가안보실장, 장하성 정책실장, 안호영 주미대사, 윤영찬 국민소통수석, 김현철 경제보좌관 등이 참석했고, 미국 쪽에선 렉스 틸러슨 국무장관과 제임스 매티스 국방장관, 윌버 로스 상무장관, 레인스 프리버스 백악관 비서실장, 허버트 맥매스터 국가안보보좌관 등이 배석했다. (한겨레 6월30일)
