영화감독 딘 이스라엘라이트는 "트리니에겐 자아에 대한 질문이 많다. 아직도 자기 정체에 대한 고민이 있다."라고 캐릭터에 관해 설명했다.

이스라엘라이트는 "그 장면이 매우 중요했고 영화 나머지에 크게 영향을 미치는데, 그 순간이 '그래도 괜찮아'라는 의미를 부여하는 장면이기 때문이다. 이 영화는 모는 사람에게 고민이 있고 해당하는 그룹이 있으면 어떤 부류에 속하든 '괜찮다'는 사실을 시사하고 있다"라고 설명했다.

성소수자를 영화 주인공으로 부각시킨 건 이전 슈퍼히어로 장르에 없는 사례다. 사실 캣우먼과 미스틱은 성소수자로 DC나 마블 원작에 묘사됐지만 영화에선 스트레이트 캐릭터로 등장했다.
흥미로운 점은 TV쇼에선 스트레이트 캐릭터로 묘사됐던 트리니가 이번 제작진에 의해 성소수자로 바뀌었다는 것이다.
그래서 그는 이번 영화에 성소수자가 포함됐다는 사실을 더 높이 산다.
"정말로 용감한 결정이었다. 이번 일로 많은 LGBTQI 일원들이 열광할 거다."
감독 이스라엘라이트는 기자회견에서 다음과 같이 설명했다. "매우 대담한 방향으로 이야기를 재조명하기로 결정했다. 원작의 느낌만 잘 살리면 나머지는 유연하게 할 수 있다고... 골수 팬들도 좋아할 수 있을 거로 생각했다."
