뉴질랜드 남섬의 크라이스트처치 인근에서 14일(현지시간) 오전 0시 2분께 규모 7.8의 강진과 수차례의 여진이 발생했다.

한밤 뉴질랜드를 강타한 지진으로 사상자가 나왔으며 강력한 쓰나미 우려로 수많은 사람이 고지대로 대피했다.

존 키 뉴질랜드 총리는 기자회견을 통해 현재까지 지진으로 2명의 사망자가 발생했다고 밝혔다.

키 총리는 사망자 수가 더 늘어날 가능성이 있다면서 구조 활동을 위해 지진 피해가 심한 남섬 캔터베리의 카이코우라에 군용 헬기들을 보냈다고 설명했다.

미 지질조사국(USGS)에 따르면 이날 본진은 크라이스트처치에서 북동쪽으로 91㎞, 뉴질랜드 수도 웰링턴으로부터 200㎞ 떨어진 지점에서 발생했다.

진앙은 관광객들이 많이 모이는 헨머스프링 온천마을에서 남동쪽으로 15㎞ 떨어진 지역이다.

USGS는 애초 지진 규모를 7.4로 밝혔다가 이후 7.8로 상향 조정했다. 다만 진원의 깊이는 처음 10km에서 23km로 약간 깊어졌다.

유럽지중해지진센터(EMSC)는 지진 규모를 7.9, 진원의 깊이는 10km라고 설명했다.

첫 지진이 발생하고 30분 후에는 규모 6.5의 지진(USGS 기준)이 이어졌다. 이후 규모 4∼6 이상의 여진이 20여 차례 잇따랐다.

dpa통신은 본진 발생 이후 뉴질랜드 남섬과 북섬에서 100차례가 넘는 여진이 있었다고 전했다.

강진이 발생하자 뉴질랜드 방재당국은 쓰나미 경보를 발령하고 남섬 동부 해안의 주민들에게 고지대로 대피하라고 트위터와 성명을 통해 알렸다.

첫 지진이 발생하고 2시간가량이 지난 이날 오전 1시 50분께 높이 2m가량의 첫 번째 쓰나미 파도가 남섬을 강타했다.

방재당국은 쓰나미가 몇 시간 동안 계속될 수 있으므로 경보 해제 때까지 주의해야 한다고 당부했다.

일부 지역에 최대 높이 5m의 쓰나미 파도가 밀어닥칠 수 있다는 경고까지 나오면서 동부 해안지대의 주민 수천 명이 높은 지대로 대피했다고 로이터통신은 전했다.

다만 첫 번째 쓰나미 도착 후 4시간이 지난 시점에 방재당국은 쓰나미 경고 수준을 격하했다. 쓰나미 경고 강도는 약해졌지만 피해 우려는 여전히 남아 있다고 AFP통신은 설명했다.

지진이 발생하자 많은 지역에선 전기가 끊기고 휴대전화들이 불통이 되는 상황이 펼쳐졌다. 주민들과 호텔에 묵은 여행객들이 큰 진동에 놀라 거리로 쏟아지는 혼란도 있었다.

남섬 타카카에 사는 엘리자베스라는 여성은 현지 라디오에 "집 전체가 뱀처럼 꿈틀거렸다. 무언가가 부서졌고, 전기도 나갔다"고 밝혔다.

지진으로 통신망 등이 망가지면서 구체적인 피해 상황은 아직 집계되지 않고 있다.

다만 남섬 캔터베리 지역의 컬버든과 카이코우라 등에서 사상자가 발생하고 건물과 도로가 파손됐다는 보도가 나오고 있다.

소셜미디어에선 건물이 파손되거나 집안 내부가 엉망이 된 사진들이 속속 올라오고 있다.

한 남성은 트위터에 "(진앙에서 가까운) 체비엇에 사는 친구들이 몇몇 집이 사라졌다고 말했다"고 썼다.

아직 보고된 한국인 또는 교민 피해 상황은 없다.

한국 외교부는 뉴질랜드 강진과 관련해 "현재까지 파악된 우리 국민 피해는 없다"며 "주 뉴질랜드 대사관은 우리 국민 피해 여부를 지속해서 파악하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

뉴질랜드는 '불의 고리'로 불리는 환태평양 조산대에 있어 지진이 자주 일어나는 국가 중 하나다.

크라이스트처치에서는 지난 2011년 2월 규모 6.3의 강진이 발생해 185명이 목숨을 잃었다.
