시리아 알레포에서 가공할 살상무기가 모든 것을 파괴하고 있다. 주민들은 피할 곳이 없다.

휴전이 무산된 뒤 공습이 재개된 시리아 내전의 격전지 알레포에서 가공할 살상무기 벙커버스터의 공포가 확산하고 있다.

26일(현지시간) 영국 일간지 가디언에 따르면 공습을 피하려는 병력을 겨냥해 방공호를 뚫고 들어가 폭발하는 이 무기가 알레포에 무차별적으로 투하되면서 민간인들이 피신처를 완전히 잃고 말았다.

교사인 주민 압둘카피 알함도는 알레포에 있는 학교와 고아원, 병원이 다 방공호로 대피했는데 그들마저 위험에 처했다며 "세상이 우리에게 사형 선고를 내렸다"고 말했다.

알함도는 지난 23일 알레포 동부 마슈하드 지역에 벙커버스터가 떨어질 때 폭발음은 전에 들어본 적 없는 것이었다며 자신과 가족이 대피한 1㎞ 떨어진 곳까지 잔해가 날아왔다며 현장에는 거대한 분화구가 남았다고 밝혔다.

그는 "러시아가 벙커버스터를 사용했다는 것은 놀랍지 않다. 그들은 잔혹한 범죄 국가다. 놀라운 것은 러시아가 그 무기를 사용하는 것을 국제사회가 내버려두고 있다는 것"이라며 "여기는 지옥 그 자체"라고 말했다.

벙커버스터는 지하에 있는 목표물을 타격하기 위해 고안된 폭탄으로, 러시아에서 만든 모델은 무게가 1t 이상으로 철근 콘크리트를 2m까지 관통할 수 있다.

알레포에서 의사로 일하는 무함마드 아부 라잡은 "우리는 무자비함과 대학살, 본적 없는 위력을 가진 무기 앞에 서 있다"며 "그 무기는 발아래 땅을 흔들고 있다"고 말했다.

마슈하드 지역에 사는 언론인인 오마르 아랍은 "5년 동안 알레포에 살았고 수많은 폭격을 봐 왔지만, 이번 폭탄의 파괴력은 처음"이라며 "가장 무서운 것은 그것이 건물 전체를 무너뜨릴 수 있다는 것"이라고 밝혔다.

그는 벙커버스터 공격에 대해 "사람들을 쫓아내는 것이 목표"라고 덧붙였다.

벙커버스터가 떨어진 곳 인근에 사는 알레포 주민 아레프 알아레프도 "그 폭탄이 떨어진 때는 지진이 난 것 같다"며 "그런 파괴력은 처음 봤다. 말 그대로 절멸의 전쟁"이라고 전했다.

마슈하드 외에도 포위된 반군 장악 지역 두 곳에도 벙커버스터가 떨어진 것으로 알려졌다.

공개된 사진을 보면 벙커버스터로 만들어진 구덩이 한가운데 있는 사람이 아주 작아 보일 정도로 거대한 규모라고 가디언은 전했다.

러시아는 부인하고 있지만, 미국과 영국은 지난 25일 열린 유엔 안전보장이사회(안보리)에서 러시아가 시리아군의 알레포 공습을 지원하는 야만적 행위를 저지르고 있다고 강력하게 비판했다.

서맨사 파워 유엔주재 미국대사는 러시아와 아사드 정권이 사람들을 살리려는 구호대나 병원 등을 폭격하고 있다며 "이들은 평화를 추구하는 대신 전쟁을 야기하고 있다. 러시아가 하는 것은 테러와의 전쟁이 아니라 만행"이라고 주장했다.

매튜 라이크로프트 유엔주재 영국 대사도 "러시아와 시리아 정부는 이번 주말 알레포에 새로운 지옥을 선사했다"고 비난했다.

한때 시리아 최대 도시이자 상업 중심지였던 알레포는 2012년 이후 정부군과 반군이 동서로 나누어 장악하고 있으며, 반군이 장악한 동부 지역은 3개월째 고립된 상태다.

현지 인권단체와 활동가들에 따르면 미국과 러시아가 합의한 잠정 휴전이 지난 19일 깨진 이후 공습이 재개되면서 248명이 사망했으며, 이날 오전에만 어린이를 포함해 10명이 숨졌다.

시리아 민방위의 한 구조대원은 공습에 네이팜탄, 집속탄, 인광탄 등 모든 종류의 무기가 사용되고 있다고 BBC 방송에 말했다.

특정 지역을 무차별적으로 불사르는 소이탄과 지뢰 같은 새끼 폭탄을 마구 흩뿌리는 집속탄은 민간인 부수피해 때문에 전쟁범죄 논란을 부르는 무기다.

조시 어니스트 백악관 대변인은 버락 오바마 대통령이 알레포의 유혈 사태에 대해 "깊이 우려하고 있다"고 전하면서 "아사드 정권과 러시아가 민간인을 굴복시키려고 공습과 폭격으로 합동 작전을 펼치고 있다"고 비난했다.

또 급수 시설을 파괴한 것은 "상궤를 벗어난 일"이라며 "세계의 양심을 가진 사람들이 목소리를 높여야 한다"고 덧붙였다.
