[화보] 동성애에 보수적이기로 유명한 세르비아에서도 무지개 깃발이 거리를 뒤덮었다

보수적인 사회 분위기로 동성애 혐오 현상이 강한 발칸 반도의 국가 세르비아에서도 무지개 깃발이 나부꼈다.

AP통신에 따르면 18일 세르비아 수도 베오그라드에 수 백 명의 동성애자들이 모여 시내 중심가를 행진했다. 세르비아 정부가 프라이드 퍼레이드를 금지한 지 3년 만이다.

동성애 인권 운동가인 보반 스토야노비치는 경찰의 삼엄한 경비 속에 열린 이날 퍼레이드에서 "이런 행사가 좀 더 크고 강해져야 한다"며 "베오그라드는 이성애자뿐 아니라 동성애자들의 도시이기도 하다"고 강조했다.

세르비아에서는 2010년 우파 단체와 축구 훌리건이 동성애 단체와 충돌, 경찰을 포함해 100여 명이 다치고, 도심이 파괴된 사건이 일어난 이후 동성애 관련 행사가 빈번히 금지되거나 취소됐다.

세르비아 정부는 그러나 동성애자들의 인권 보호 문제가 세르비아의 유럽연합(EU) 가입을 위한 전제 조건 중 하나로 인식됨에 따라 지난 달 사상 처음으로 동성애자를 내각의 장관으로 임명하는 등 최근 들어 동성애자들의 인권 증진을 위해 부쩍 노력하고 있다.

정부는 이날 행사에서도 경찰 병력 수 천 명과 경비견, 헬리콥터 등을 동원해 보안을 강화했고, 이 덕분에 별다른 사고 없이 퍼레이드가 종료된 것으로 전해졌다.

한편, 세르비아의 첫 동성애 장관으로 이날 퍼레이드에 동참한 아나 브르나비치 행정자치부 장관은 "세르비아 정부는 동성애자뿐 아니라 학대와 차별에 시달리고 있는 다른 소수자들의 처우 개선에도 적극적으로 나설 것"이라고 말했다.
