뉴욕 맨해튼에서 토요일 밤 대규모 폭발이 발생했다(사진)

미국 뉴욕 맨해튼의 첼시 인근에서 토요일 저녁 폭발이 일어나 최소 25명이 다쳤다고 뉴욕시 소방당국이 밝혔다.

폭발은 17일(현지시간) 오후 8시30분께 23번가에서 일어났으며, 부상자 여러명이 인근 병원으로 후송됐다고 소방당국 관계자는 전했다. 그러나 이들 가운데 다수는 경상으로 생명에 지장이 있는 부상자는 없다고 이 관계자는 덧붙였다.

뉴욕경찰 대(對)테러반이 출동했으며, 현지 교통 서비스도 중단된 상태다. 폭발 직후 미 FBI와 국토안보부 관리들이 현장에 출동해 테러 사건인지를 조사 중이다.

이번 폭발은 현지 시각장애인 지원 시설 밖에서 일어났으며, 목격자들은 폭발 당시 "귀청이 터질듯한" 굉음과 함께 바람이 일고, 연기 냄새가 났다고 전했다.

한편 맨해튼 첼시 폭발에 앞서 이날 오전 9시 30분께 뉴저지주의 씨사이드 파크에서 '해병대 자선 마라톤' 행사가 개막하기 직전 마라톤 코스 부근에서 쓰레기 캔 폭발물이 터지는 사건이 발생했다. 사상자는 발생하지 않았다.

현지 오션 카운티 검찰청의 앨 델러 페이브 대변인은 "오전 9시 30분에 폭발이 일어났으나 다친 사람도 없고 주변 구조물도 파괴된 것이 없다"고 밝혔다. CNN은 당국자를 인용해 "파이프 모양의 3개가 연결된 폭발물이 씨사이드 파크 내 판자로 깔아 만든 길 주변에서 폭발했다"고 전했다.

애초 마라톤 행사는 폭발 사건이 나기 전에 시작될 예정이었으나, 마라톤 참가자가 많아 등록 시간이 길어지는 바람에 출발이 지연되는 바람에 폭발로 인한 사상자가 거의 없었던 것으로 알려졌다.

폭발 사건으로 마라톤 행사는 취소됐으며, 조사를 위해 폭발지점 부근의 통행이 금지됐고, 주변 주택 거주자들도 대피토록 했다. 현지 당국은 만약의 사태를 대비해 마라톤 행사장 부근 해변 출입을 통제했다.
