미국 상업용 정기 항공편이 31일(현지시간) 반세기 만에 처음으로 쿠바로 취항했다.

미 민간 항공사 제트블루 소속 비행기는 이날 오전 10시께 플로리다 주 포트로더데일을 출발해 혁명 지도자 에르네스토 체 게바라의 기념비로 유명한 쿠바 중부 도시 산타클라라에 도착했다.

제트블루 387편은 앤서니 폭스 미 교통부 장관과 로빈 헤이스 제트블루 최고경영자, 쿠바계 미국인 승무원, 언론인 등 승객 150명을 태우고 72분간 비행했다.

이는 1961년 외교 단절 이후 55년 만에 양국 간 이뤄지는 첫 상업용 정기 항공편 취항이다.

이번 비행을 시작으로 매주 300여 편의 항공편이 미국과 쿠바를 정기적으로 오갈 예정이다. 이 가운데 90개 편은 양국 정부로부터 9개 쿠바 공항으로의 취항 허가를 받은 상태다.

쿠바의 수도 아바나 노선의 경우 지난달 8개 미국 민간 항공사들이 하루 총 20편의 왕복 항공편에 대한 취항 임시 허가를 받았다.

미국과 쿠바는 지난해 7월 국교 관계 회복에 따른 후속조치의 하나로 같은 해 12월 양국 간 상업용 정기 항공편 취항에 합의했다.

이에 따라 지난 6월 미 교통부는 아메리칸 항공과 프런티어 항공, 제트블루, 실버 에어웨이스, 사우스웨스트 항공, 선컨츄리 항공 등 미국 6개 민간 항공사에 쿠바 취항 허가를 내줬다.

정기 취항 전에는 미국 로스앤젤레스와 마이애미, 탬파 등지에서 매일 10∼15편 정도의 전세기가 양국을 비정기로 오갔다.
