영국 EU탈퇴 찬성파와 반대파가 '템즈강 전투'를 벌이다 (동영상)

영국의 유럽연합(EU) 탈퇴(브렉시트) 찬반을 묻는 국민투표를 일주일 앞두고 여론이 팽팽한 가운데, 런던 템스 강에서는 난데없는 수상결투가 벌어졌다.

EU에 반대하는 대표적인 극우 정치인 나이절 패라지 영국독립당(UKIP) 대표가 이끄는 시위대와 대표적인 잔류 지지파인 유명 싱어송라이터 밥 겔도프가 이끄는 시위대가 맞붙은 것이다.

15일(현지시간) 일간 텔레그래프 등 영국 언론들에 따르면 이날 오전 10시께 EU에 반대하는 깃발을 달고 경적을 울리는 30여척의 배가 영국 국회의사당 옆 타워브리지 아래로 몰려들었다.


이 시간 국회의사당에서는 데이비드 캐머런 총리가 브렉시트에 관해 의회에서 답변을 하고 있었다.

이 배들 중 한 척에 타 시위를 이끈 패라지 대표는 영해에 같은 접근권을 허용하는 EU의 어업 정책이 "우리 산업을 망치고 있다"며 "우리 영해를 돌려받아야 한다"고 주장했다.

앞서 패라지 대표는 지난 3일 브렉시트 지지자들과 함께 60척의 배를 이끌고 템스 강을 따라 의회로 갈 것이라고 '선전포고'를 한 바 있다.

여기에 겔도프가 이끄는 브렉시트 반대파 시위대가 가세하면서 상황은 더욱 커졌다. 아일랜드 밴드 '붐타운 래츠'의 리드 싱어인 겔도프는 사회 운동가로도 유명하다.

브렉시트 반대파가 대형 스피커를 통해 시카고의 '이프 유 리브 미 나우'(If you leave me now)와 도비 그레이의 '더 '인' 크라우드'(The 'In' Crowd) 등을 울리며 다가가자, 찬성파 쪽에서는 반대파 시위대가 탄 소형 고무보트를 향해 호스로 물을 뿌리기도 했다.

겔도프는 패라지 대표가 유럽의회 어업위원회 회의에 43차례 중 단 한 번 참석한 사실을 꼬집으며 "당신은 어민들의 친구가 아니다", "사기꾼이다"라고 목소리를 높였다.

이에 패라지 대표는 EU의 공동어업 정책으로 어업계가 황폐화됐다면서 '백만장자'인 겔도프가 영국 어업계를 무시하고 있다고 맞받았다.

결국 경찰이 개입해 양측의 배를 떨어뜨려 놓고, 스피커 소리를 낮추게 했다.

이날의 기이한 장면은 온라인에서 '템스 강의 전투'로 불리며 화제를 불러 일으켰다.

일부에서는 영국과 EU의 미래가 달린 심각한 토론이 터무니없는 수상결투로 격하됐다며 우려하는 목소리가 나오기도 했다.
