미국 연방수사국(FBI)이 샌버너디노 테러범의 아이폰 5c의 보안을 해제하는 데 사용한 기법으로는 신형 아이폰의 잠금을 풀 수 없다고 제임스 코미 FBI 국장이 밝혔다.

CNN머니 등 미국 언론매체들에 따르면 코미 국장은 6일 밤(현지시간) 오하이오 주 갬비어 소재 케년대의 미국 민주주의 연구센터가 주최한 '프라이버시의 기대: 암호화, 사찰 그리고 빅데이터' 회의에서 이렇게 말했다.

그는 FBI가 민간 업자로부터 도구를 구입해 iOS 9이 깔린 아이폰 5c의 잠금을 해제했다며 "우리는 좁은 범위의 전화기들에만 작동하는 도구를 보유하고 있다"고 말했다. 현재 iOS의 최신 버전은 9.3.1이다.

그는 2014년 가을에 나온 아이폰 6 이후 모델이나 2013년 가을에 아이폰 5c와 동시에 나온 아이폰 5s도 이 도구로는 잠금 해제가 되지 않는다고 설명했다.

코미 국장은 미국 정부가 아이폰 5c의 잠금을 해제하는 데 사용한 방법을 애플에 알려줄지를 검토 중이라고 말했다.

그는 "우리가 애플에 말해 주면 애플이 그 보안 취약점을 고칠 것이고 그러면 우리는 출발점으로 다시 돌아오게 된다"며 "그렇게 될 수도 있는데, 아직 결정하지는 않았다"고 설명했다.

코미 국장의 이번 발언은 FBI가 하드웨어를 분해하지 않고 애플의 소프트웨어 취약점을 공략하는 방식으로 아이폰 5c의 잠금을 해제했음을 강하게 시사하는 것이어서 주목된다.

그간 정보기술(IT) 업계에서는 FBI가 하드웨어를 분해한 뒤 메모리에 담긴 내용의 복사본을 여러 개 만든 후 가능한 암호 조합을 모조리 입력해 보는 방식을 썼으리라는 관측이 있었다.

애플은 코미 국장의 발언에 대해 즉각 반응을 보이지 않고 있다.

FBI는 작년 12월 캘리포니아 주 샌버너디노에서 14명을 숨지게 한 총격 테러의 배후를 조사하기 위해 "테러범이 쓰던 아이폰 5c의 잠금을 해제하는 데 애플이 협조하도록 강제해 달라"는 취지의 소송을 올해 2월 연방법원에 냈다.

애플은 아이폰의 보안을 우회하는 '백도어'(뒷문)를 만드는 것은 매우 위험하다고 주장하면서 FBI에 맞섰으나, FBI가 3월 28일 "애플의 도움 없이 잠금 해제에 성공했다"며 소송을 취하함에 따라 법정 다툼이 일단락됐다.
